The Classic Center convention facility in Athens, Ga. revealed a $24 million expansion that will double the size of conventions it can accommodate. The update added a new 8,000-square-foot atrium and expanded the main exhibit hall to 56,000 square feet. Other spaces include a 2,056-seat theater and 29 breakout rooms.
A 185-room Hilton Garden Inn is adjacent to the center, which is located within walking distance of 1,500 hotel rooms.
Before its opening in 1995, the Classic Center began as a community project, and now its Cultural Foundation supports the local arts by purchasing pieces from area artists to hang in its halls and supports regional shows and performing arts groups.
