What are a few of your favorite things about living in Austin?
I count myself blessed to have been born and raised in Austin, and even more so to know that I’ll never stop discovering inspiring sights, sounds, tastes and treasures. Austin has delicious food for all diets (gluten-free, vegan—no problema!); world-class live music for every day of the week; the lake and Hill Country within 20 minutes of downtown; and a laid-back Southern comfort that can make even the Texas heat seem bearable.
Why do you think Austin inspires creativity for musicians like yourself?
Austin is a place where music thrives. Not the music business, but music itself. It’s a place where artists can discover who they are, who they can be, and who will listen to them. Or, if you’re like me, you just grow up here and find your niche. It’s not competition, it’s jamming, singing, dancing and supporting each other.
What are two or three musts for groups to experience while meeting in Austin?
The best days start with caffeine and an Austin Chronicle (for all the happenings) at a local coffee shop like Jo’s, Dominican Joe, Bouldin Creek or Spiderhouse.
A morning jog around Town Lake helps work up an appetite for huge pancakes and/or queso at Kerbey Lane Cafe, or take advantage of the recent food trailer explosion on South Congress Avenue or East 6th Street for a unique and delicious Austin experience.
If you want to see a film while you’re in town, Alamo Drafthouse is the best place for a hysterical pre-show (tailored to each movie) and dinner at your seat, or take your crew to Esther’s Follies for a musical comedy show you’ll never forget.
After hours, make your way over to East 6th or Rainey Street for drinks and live music. Gypsy Lounge is always rocking and the White Horse is the place for impromptu jam sessions. The Continental Club and its Gallery upstairs are mainstays in Austin and book only the best bands.
