London's Heathrow airport plans expansion

Heathrow Airport unveiled a proposal to construct a third runway and sixth terminal, hoping to increase its annual capacity from 480,000 flights a year to 740,000. The London airport typically operates near 98 percent capacity and processes more than 70 million passengers a year. The project has faced criticism from politicians and environmental and community groups for years, and leaders are exploring alternatives at other regional airports to help Britain increase its airlift capacity.

Heathrow is also celebrating the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who by placing the show’s famous blue police box on the tarmac. Props and memorabilia from the BBC series are on display throughout the airport.
