Executive Director
Statewide Towing Association
Southborough, Mass.
Describe your event.
The Statewide Towing Association has been hosting an annual trade show since 1971. The purpose is to highlight the latest technology and the newest state-of-the-art equipment. In conjunction with showcasing the best of the best in the towing industry, we offer a wide variety of seminars, ranging from hands-on training to managerial skills. We have a smaller target audience; our average attendance is approximately 2,500.
Why did you decide to host the meeting in Worcester?
[For several years, the show was held in areas throughout western Massachusetts.] We realized there was a premier location that we had overlooked in Worcester! Once we met with the DCU Center, we knew we had a new home.
What surprised you the most?
We were pleased to receive a warm welcome from everyone at the DCU Center, the area hotels, the CVB, and the city of Worcester. They all worked with us to meet our specific attendee and exhibitor needs. Our attendees enjoyed the vast amount of things to do in the area, all within walking distance of the convention center.
Was anybody particularly helpful?
There were two people worthy of special mention: Kathy Ryan at the CVB and Connie Pion at the Hilton Garden Inn. The new Hilton Garden Inn was blocked as our host hotel. Unfortunately, their grand opening date was pushed back to after our trade show dates. This created a huge dilemma for us, as all our advertising was set. Connie took care of arranging a room block at another hotel and personally handled reservation calls.
What were some of the unique off-site venues that you used?
One of my personal favorites is Viva Bene Restaurant. We hosted a private welcome reception on Friday evening. Many of our exhibitors and VIP attendees chose to dine there throughout the weekend.
How does Worcester compare to other cities where you have hosted meetings?
The first year in any new venue is usually a bit stressful, but everyone worked to make this event a success for us. I would highly recommend Worcester. The city offers a wide variety of restaurants, museums, shopping, and fun!
