- Construction is under way on a W hotel (952.844.6451; www.starwoodhotels.com), located in Minneapolis’ Foshay Tower. The tower is an historic building in downtown Minneapolis that originally opened in 1929 and previously operated with a restaurant and office space. The W, scheduled to open in June 2008, will feature 229 guest rooms as well as meeting facilities.
- The Westin Minneapolis (612.333.4006; www.westin.com) is slated to open by the end of April with 214 guest rooms and 9,000 square feet of meeting space.
- Construction is under way on the Ivy Hotel + Residence (612.333.4489; www.ivyliving.com), located three blocks from the Minnesota Convention Center in downtown Minneapolis. The property is scheduled to open in November with 136 guest rooms, 92 condos and 6,000 square feet of meeting space.
- Chambers Minneapolis (612.767.6900; www.chambersminneapolis.com), a hip, art-inspired hotel located downtown, opened last September with 60 guest rooms and event space for up to 200 people.
- The Minneapolis Marriott City Center (612.349.4000; www.marriott.com) plans to complete a guest room renovation in April. Once the rooms are finished, the property will begin a lobby, restaurant and street entrance renovation that it expects to wrap up in August. The property will also upgrade some of its meeting facilities by September. The hotel has 583 guest rooms and suites and 33,000 square feet of meeting space.
- The Hilton Minneapolis (612.376.1000; www.minneapolis.hilton.com) is in the midst of an $11 million renovation. The hotel finished updating its meeting space and restaurant last year and plans to finish remodeling its guest rooms in April. The hotel will also complete a fitness center upgrade later this summer. The 821-room hotel houses 74,000 square feet of meeting space.
- A new Minnesota Twins Stadium (612.375.7450; www.twinsbaseball.com) is slated to break ground by this summer and open in April 2010. Located in Minneapolis’ Warehouse District, the stadium will house 40,000 seats, and it will also offer facilities for group events. The Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, where the Twins currently play, will continue to be used as the home base of the Minnesota Vikings football team.
Saint Paul
- The Radisson Riverfront Hotel was rebranded the Crowne Plaza Hotel St. Paul-Riverfront (651.292.1900; www.ichotelsgroup.com) in March 2006. The 470-room hotel contains 50,000 square feet of meeting space.
- The City Center Hotel Saint Paul (651.291.8800; www.citycenterhotelstpaul.com), formerly a Radisson, became an independent hotel last March and initiated a facility-wide renovation at that time. The renovation is scheduled for completion this spring, at which time the hotel will be reflagged, although its new brand has not been announced. The hotel contains 250 guest rooms and 10,000 square feet of function space.
Minneapolis North
- The Fountains at Arbor Lakes (763.424.0504; www.ci.maple-grove.mn.us), a mixed-use development with stores, restaurants and hotels, opened last October as the newest addition in the master-planned development of Arbor Lakes in Maple Grove. The Fountains development joins the existing Main Street at Arbor Lakes and The Shoppes at Arbor Lakes, which debuted in 2003. The development consists of 2.2 million square feet of retail space as well as dining venues and commercial space.
- Holiday Inn and Suites Maple Grove (763.425.3800; www.ichotelsgroup.com) opened next to the Shoppes at Arbor Lakes in Maple Grove Jan. 30. The property features 136 guest rooms, 1,575 square feet of meeting space and a 25,000-square-foot on-site water park.
- Construction is under way on the new Courtyard Maple Grove/Arbor Lakes (320.235.7207; www.marriott.com/courtyard) at the Arbor Lakes development. The 115-room hotel is scheduled to open next January with one boardroom.
- The National Sports Center (763.717.3888; www.nscsports.org), a 630-acre sports complex in Blaine, Minn., opened its Schwan Super Rink in December. The new facility is located next to the Schwan Events Center and contains four ice rinks, three of which are dismantled during the summer to make way for three 17,000-square-foot event spaces.
Bloomington
- Plans are under way for a phase II expansion of the Mall of America (952.883.8797; www.mallofamerica.com). If approved, construction may begin as early as this summer on a 5.6 million-square-foot expansion of the existing mall. The expansion is expected to include up to four hotels, a 6,300-seat performing arts center, a dinner theater complex, and a 25,000-square-foot rotunda-like space for group events.
- Construction is under way on a new 11-story Hilton (800.445.8667; www.hilton.com) in Bloomington. The property is scheduled to open next January with 256 guest rooms and 9,100 square feet of meeting space.
- The 147-room Oak Ridge Hotel and Conference Center (952.368.3100; www.oakridge.dolce.com), a Dolce-managed property located west of Bloomington in Chaska, completed a renovation of its 22,000 square feet of meeting space last year. The property also plans to finish re-carpeting its public spaces this summer.
