- The Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in St. Louis, site of the famous Gateway Arch, is presenting the special exhibit A Legacy of Courage: Dred Scott & The Quest for Freedom beginning March 3. The exhibit commemorates the 150th anniversary of the legal battle of Dred Scott and his wife, Harriett, who were slaves that partitioned the St. Louis court for their freedom. The case, which went all the way to the Supreme Court, was an important precursor to the Civil War. The exhibit will present the history of the case on three levels: the personal story of the Scotts, the story of the litigation and how the legal system worked, and also within the broad framework of the context of slavery and the ways in which people tried to escape from it during the 19th century. A Legacy of Courage: Dred Scott & The Quest for Freedom will be on display in the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial’s historic Old Courthouse, where the case was originally tried. - Marriott International announced that during the last year it has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. by 70,000 tons, the equivalent of removing 10,000 cars from U.S. streets. Marketing itself as the first major hotel company to proactively join the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Climate Leaders Program, the emissions reductions are the initial results of Marriott’s five-year goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 6 percent per guest room by 2010. Marriott’s efforts to lesson its impact on the environment led to its recognition as an Energy Star Partner of the Year for Excellence in Energy Management for the past two years.
