  • Though it’s only been open five years, Mohegan Sun’s 34-story hotel tower is undergoing a $13.8 million refurbishment. As of June, all 1,200 guest rooms and suites will be completely upgraded, including the replacement of furnishings. This renovation precedes a larger $740 million expansion project, named Project Horizon, which is expected to add more than 1.4 million square feet to Mohegan Sun’s existing structure, including a new 1,000-room hotel slated to debut in 2010.   • Boston’s 1851 landmark Charles Street Jail has been transformed into a four-star luxury property, The Liberty Hotel. The $120 million hotel, slated to open this summer, features 300 guest rooms, including 10 suites with river views. It also offers 6,000 square feet of flexible meeting space located within the original historic structure; and an adjacent, newly constructed 16-story wing. The original venue has been preserved and restored, with some integrated highlights such as vestiges of jail cells within the hotel lobby bar.   • New York City’s Tudor Hotel at the United Nations, formerly the Crowne Plaza Hotel at the United Nations, shed its brand and became an independent landmark hotel, reclaiming its original name. The 300-room property, built in 1931 as part of the Tudor City urban development area, recently underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation of its lobby, bar, lounge, and restaurant, though there are no immediate plans for any further major refurbishments.   • The $160 million Seneca Allegany Casino & Hotel, run by the Seneca Nation of Indians, opened in the foothills of the Allegany Mountains in March. The resort features a 212-room luxury hotel, complete with three new restaurants, a full-service spa and salon, and an indoor swimming pool, as well as a full-service casino.
