Macau has plenty of casinos and culture in store for visitors. The Historic Center of Macau was officially listed as the 31st World Heritage Site by UNESCO in July 2005. There are 28 historic monuments and eight public squares here that are considered global cultural treasures--that's nearly four stellar attractions for every square mile of Macau.
Here are some of the highlights:
A-Ma Temple
The oldest of the area's three major temples, construction started in 1488 on this stately structure. It's one of the most well-preserved models of a classic Chinese temple in the world.
Casa Garden
The former home of a wealthy Portuguese merchant, this park-like enclosure is made for leisurely strolling and contains the Old Protestant Cemetery, built by the early Catholic settlers who did not want Protestants buried within the city.
Fortazela do Monte
Built in the 16th century to protect Jesuit missionaries, the Portuguese military later seized the historic fortress and it became the center of its military presence.
Guia Fortress
A tourist favorite, the fortress, lighthouse and chapel that make up the complex started construction in 1622 after the Netherlands made a military play for Macau. The first Western-style lighthouse in East Asia, the lighthouse beacon is visible for up to 20 miles in good conditions.
Ruins of the Cathedral of St. Paul
All that's left of this Jesuit-built church is the stone façade, but it's an architectural wonder nevertheless. The stone facade was intricately carved by exiled Japanese Christians and is set in the very center of Macau. Carvings include both Christian and Asian themes.
