What are three of the best ways for attendees to take in Detroit’s vibrant music scene?
- Live Jazz: Originating in 1934, Baker’s Keyboard Lounge still maintains its intimate setting, great acoustic sound and sophisticated “old school” vibe that has made it a favorite for jazz aficionados for 72 years. Baker’s has hosted a “who’s who” in jazz, including Dave Brubeck, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Wynton Marsalis, and Anita O’Day, to name only a few. The Detroit International Jazz Festival at Hart Plaza and Campus Martius Park is held annually over Labor Day weekend. Seldom Blues Jazz and Supper Club, situated inside the General Motors Renaissance Center Detroit, overlooks the Detroit River. The venue offers a private dining room for special group events.
- Music Born in Detroit: Motown to Electronic: The Motown Historical Museum displays exhibits and costumes from the legacy of Motown and is home to Studio A, where many hits were recorded. The venue is available for midsize special events and receptions. St. Andrew’s Hall and The Shelter, located on Congress Street in downtown Detroit, was made famous by Eminem in the movie 8 Mile. This is the spot where the movie’s infamous hip-hop “battles” took place, and it still draws artists from hip-hop to lesser-known indie rock groups and singer-songwriters. Movement: Detroit’s Electronic Music Festival at Hart Plaza is held annually over Memorial Day weekend. It’s the largest electronic music festival in the world and draws international visitors.
- Highbrow to Down-Home: Home of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Max M. Fisher Music Center on Woodward Avenue in midtown Detroit plays host to everything from chamber music to spoken word performances. The Max offers event space to accommodate everything from conference calls to receptions. The Majestic Complex, also on Woodward Avenue, is a live music venue and theater where, it is rumored, Houdini performed. The facility includes a cafe and bowling alley. Check out the Rock ’n’ Bowl to bowl on the oldest lanes in the city, set to great music.
