New Zealand: Four Auckland Maori Musts

Maori culture is everywhere in New Zealand, and the country has tried to honor these original settlers and keep their culture alive. Although Rotorua (www.rotoruanz.com) is the undisputed center of Maori culture, there are still plenty of exciting ways to experience it for groups that don't have the time to get out of Auckland--forget quiet museums with displays collecting dust behind glass cases. The indigenous culture in New Zealand is full of life. Here are four good ways to see it for yourself:

Auckland Museum Manaia Cultural Performance

The Auckland Museum's cultural performance group Manaia performs three times a day, seven days a week, with an extra performance during the summer months. The show consists of a welcome dance, stick game and weaponry display. This is followed by an introduction to the Maori Gallery, which houses the country's finest collection of Maori treasures. www.aucklandmuseum.com

Pakiri Beach Horse Rides

This adventure wins the prize for most exciting way to learn about Maori culture: gallop on white horses across a sandy beach by day, hear Maori stories by campfire at night. Durations ranging from half-day rides to seven-day treks are available. www.horseride-nz.co.nz

Maori Guided Walk of Auckland

The Tourism Auckland Visitor Centre offers two different walks with Maori guides. The first walk goes past Auckland landmarks and stops at sites of historical significance to the Maori. The second walk goes to a dormant volcano that was once a fortified village for the Ngati Whatua tribe, the custodians of this sacred site. www.aucklandnz.com

Pounamu Performing Arts

Specializing in corporate and conference events, Pounamu Performing Arts can arrange shows to fit a planner's needs. Pounamu is recognized as one of the premier Maori cultural performance groups in New Zealand. www.maoriperformingarts.co.nz
