For the most part, communication is not a problem in India, as English is widely spoken thanks to the British influence on the educational system. What can be overwhelming for first-time visitors is the sheer quantity of new and unusual sights. Experienced travelers will tell you there's nothing wrong with taking things slow to start. India can be intense, but is also one of the most rewarding places in the world to visit.
When to go
The winter months (November-February) are the coolest, while the rest of the year is hot and humid. The monsoon months (June-September) can be cool at times, though marred by heavy rainfall.
Getting around
Taxis, cars for hire (along with drivers) and auto-rickshaws allow for easy travel within the city. Mumbai's metered yellow and black taxis are a convenient way to travel around the city. Auto-rickshaws are also metered but are only confined to the outer limits of Mumbai.
Costs
Because demand outstrips supply here, a room at a nice hotel starts at around the $200 mark, but stellar deals are to be had in shopping and dining.
Safety
A fairly safe place, beggars and street children are a heartbreaking yet never-ending fact of life in Mumbai and tend to congregate near tourist spots. Indian officials advise travelers to not give money or any other items as it perpetuates a dependence on handouts.
Electricity
230V-240V 50HzHz
Money
Credit cards are widely accepted at international hotel chains and at upscale shopping and dining establishments. Several international banks exchange cash and give cash advances on major credit cards. Tips are not mandatory, but 10 percent at a restaurant is appropriate and smaller tips to porters and drivers is appreciated.
Visas
Visitors from most countries need a visa, which typically cost between $5 and $50, depending on the type and length of stay. See http://passport.nic.in for more information. Conference visas are issued for conferences, seminars or meetings in India. A letter of invitation from the organizer of the conference needs to be submitted along with the visa application.
