Whether going by train, bus or plane, traveling in one of Southeast Asia's most developed and modern countries is a study in comfort and convenience. Here is a list of must-see places that are easily reached from Bangkok, listed in the order of time it takes to get there.
Ancient City
Think you can’t see all of Thailand’s architectural gems in one visit? Think again. Located a short drive away from Bangkok, this open-air museum was built on 320 acres of land in the shape of Thailand. It shows the country’s most striking monuments in model size. To see “all” of Thailand in one afternoon, rent a bicycle at the entrance. www.ancientcity.com
Ayutthaya
A short train ride away is the city that served as the capital of the Kingdom of Ayutthaya from 1350 to 1767. Now a historic park that's also a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Buddhist temples and ruins here are best seen from the top of an elephant. For a nice photo opportunity, look for the Buddha tree—a stone Buddha head that looks as if it’s resting in the roots.
Krabi
A short flight from Bangkok, Krabi was where the city scenes of the movie The Beach were filmed. However, the city isn’t the main draw, it’s the coast you want to see. Take a boat to Hat Rai Le where you can indulge in Thai massages and cocktails on the beach, learn how to dive in crystal-clear waters, or climb the limestone cliffs that overlook the sea.
Ko Tao
If there is a heaven for divers, it will probably look like Ko Tao. A secluded island in the Gulf of Thailand that caters almost exclusively to divers, Ko Tao has it all: tropical beauty, abundant marine life, colorful coral reefs, and quiet guesthouses where visitors come to get away from the never-ending party on nearby Ko Samui. To get here, fly to Ko Samui, then hop on a boat to the island.
