Short Takes

Museums & Attractions
  • Florida’s Boca Raton Museum of Art early next year will be presenting the exhibition Degas in Bronze: The Complete Sculptures, featuring 73 sculptures posthumously cast in bronze from Degas’ original composite and wax models. Featuring his signature ballerinas, racehorses and bathers, among other figures, the show highlights the talents of Degas, considered one of the most important 19th century artists. Degas in Bronze, which runs from Jan. 25 to April 27, is taken from the collections of MASP, or the Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand, Sao Paulo, Brazil. The exhibit is organized by Joseph S. Czestochowski, International Arts, and in Boca Raton is supported by the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities. For more information, call 561.392.2500 or visit www.bocamuseum.org.

  • Wheels are in motion to create a National Hurricane Museum & Science Center as part of the Creole Nature Trail All-American Road, a 180-mile nationally designated byway that loops through Cameron and Calcasieu parishes in southwest Louisiana, an area severely impacted by 2005’s Hurricane Rita. Support to the tune of a $1.3 million grant was given by the U.S. Transportation Administration’s National Scenic Byway Program. Plans are for artifacts from previous storms and personal histories of those who have suffered through past hurricanes to be preserved at the museum, and an interpretation of hurricanes on the land, people, culture and heritage to be shown. The Center will pay homage to 1957’s Hurricane Audrey, when more than 500 Louisianans lost their lives along the Creole Nature Trail. For more information, call the Southwest Louisiana CVB at 800.456.7952 or visit www.nhmsc.com.

  • LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort in Naples, Fla., recently partnered with the Conservancy of Southwest Florida to protect sea turtles through the Conservancy Sea Turtle Monitoring and Protection Program. Many turtles fall victim to pollution or artificial lighting from beachfront resorts, which attracts hatchlings to crawl away from the ocean. Welcome cards are provided to visitors during check-in, requesting that drapes are closed by 9 p.m. to ensure hatchlings crawl to the ocean and not the resort. Also, part of the proceeds from some purchases at the resort help benefit the conservancy. From May to October, approximately 50,000 sea turtles in Florida come ashore and deposit 70 to 180 eggs; only about one in 1,000 hatchlings survive to maturity.
