What are the three of the best ways for groups to experience Triad’s wine region?

  • Old North State Winery: Triad-area wineries and vineyards are getting more and more popular every day. Since 2005, the number of wineries and vineyards has gone up from 48 to 72, all only minutes away. A day trip for me includes the Old North State Winery, located on Main Street of historic downtown Mount Airy, N.C., also known as Mayberry. This charming, renovated, 1890s mercantile building with an old-fashioned appeal offers a wine cellar perfect for private group events, a tasting room and Scuppernongs Restaurant and Deli, also available for groups.

  • Shelton Vineyards: Only 20 minutes away is the largest family-owned estate winery in North Carolina, Shelton Vineyards, located in the heart of Yadkin Valley near Dobson, N.C. This picturesque winery gives off the feel of the French Countryside. The visitor center houses a tasting bar and gift shop. A guided tour allows you to view the winemaking room and visit the barrel room. The Harvest Grill offers group-friendly upscale dining with a bistro-style atmosphere overlooking grape vines and beautifully landscaped gardens, also available for groups.

  • Childress Vineyards: To complete the day, travel to Childress Vineyards, located at the gateway of the Yadkin Valley in Lexington, N.C. This stone and stucco building with an ornate terra-cotta roof creates an elegant, aged look reminiscent of an Old World Tuscan villa. Take a guided tour of the winery to witness the craft of winemaking, then smell and taste wine at the tasting bar located in the beautiful gift shop. They have indoor and outdoor space for events.
