The Island Hotel Newport Beach
Newport Beach, Calif.
What service can you provide to groups that they normally might not receive? Beach kits to go, which includes a beach towel, bottled water and sunscreen. What are your group restaurant recommendations?
I find that many of our groups prefer dining options within walking distance. This makes for a big savings in their transportation budget. We are fortunate to have many good options, including Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse, Blue Coral Seafood, Roy’s of Hawaii, and The Ritz Restaurant & Garden (not to be confused with The Ritz-Carlton).
What are your bar or nightclub recommendations?
The Newport Harbor offers many of establishments that make for great gathering spots to people-watch and enjoy the “O.C.” atmosphere. First and foremost is The Palm Terrace Lounge, featuring Jimmy Hopper at The Island Hotel. This is a very popular spot for many of the Newport locals; reservations are highly recommended. Others to consider that also have water views include 3Thirty3, The Cannery, Kantina, and Billy’s on the Beach, which has a patio that’s great for watching the sunset.
Can you recommend a good place to take a stroll?
For an easy stroll, I suggest the outdoor shopping destination of Fashion Island, just adjacent to The Island Hotel. Whimsical, delightful dancing fountains, a beautiful koi pond and, of course, great window shopping make up the highlights. If you are a bit more energetic, within a quarter mile is the Back Bay Ecological Reserve. This is a great walk to enjoy the natural beauty of the Upper Newport Bay.
Are there any quirky places we should check out?
The Crab Cooker is a piece of Newport history, but be prepared to wait, as the line’s around the corner for this casually quirky spot best known for its crab and chowder. Another spot is Crystal Cove State Beach. Cottages from the 1940s have recently been restored on this prime piece of beachfront. The Beachcomber Cafe is a great stop for any meal period. Although they do not accept reservations, you’re sure not to even notice the time as you stroll the beach awaiting the pager to call you to eat.
If we only have an hour or two, what should we definitely check out nearby?
Definitely visit Newport Harbor. You can access the harbor via Balboa Island, just minutes away. Walk along Marine Avenue, where a small array of boutiques, galleries and specialty shops line the street. At the end of Marine Avenue is a waterside walking path that will lead you to the Balboa Ferry. Hop on over to the peninsula, where you will find Balboa Boat Rentals. Rent an electric boat and cruise the scenic Newport Harbor. If you prefer to have a skipper, a 45- or 90-minute harbor cruise is a great way to learn the history of Newport Beach.
What has been an unusual request from a group?
Within 24 hours, we once learned that a client had made a request to have a tiger on display for their event. Once we arranged for the tiger to be delivered, we then had to go through all of the red tape to obtain the proper permits! All in a day’s work.
What’s a unique event that has taken place at your property?
Running of the Bulls. This is an annual event for owners of Lamborghini’s to have a car show and then a drive to San Francisco. Our hotel was the starting point for the run. It was a rainbow display on wheels.
