Museums & Attractions
  • Tallahassee’s Museum of Florida History is celebrating the Seminole tribe’s 50th anniversary as a sovereign nation with the exhibit Seminole People of Florida: Survival and Success. The complimentary exhibit displays Seminole history from the mid-1850s to the present and features historical photographs, colorful visuals, a re-creation of an early 20th century trading post, a traditional Seminole chickee dwelling, and more than 150 artifacts such as baskets and beadwork. Visitors also have to access to oral histories, music and video clips via an interactive kiosk. The exhibit runs through June 1. For more information, call 850.245.6400 or visit www.flheritage.com/museum.

  • The Visual Arts Center of Richmond, formerly the Hand Workshop, recently expanded following more than 18 months and millions of dollars in construction. The center now offers 30 percent more classes and more ambitious exhibitions. Elizabeth King: The Sizes of Things in the Mind’s Eye was the first exhibition to open in the center’s new True F. Luck Gallery, which opened in December as part of the renovation. King, a Richmond-based sculptor, is showcasing 65 sculptures, film animations, installation pieces, drawings, and photographs produced since the late 1970s. Organized in association with the Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts, the exhibition marks the first time in nearly two decades that the artist has been featured in any depth in the Richmond area. Kudos
  • The Miami Airport Marriott donated more than $100,000 worth of furniture and household goods to benefit the Miami Rescue Mission, which helps the poor and homeless find shelter and jobs, and recycled more than 300 tons of building materials to help the environment. When the Fairfield Inn, located on the same complex as the Marriott, was demolished last year to make room for an upcoming Residence Inn, the Miami Airport Marriott recycled more than 90 percent of the building materials to be used in its construction as well as to be used in the expansion of the Courtyard by Marriott, also in the same complex. The Miami Airport Marriott is involved in a number of other community programs such as the Children’s Miracle Network and Habitat for Humanity. Innovations
  • The Northern Kentucky CVB launched a meetings-centric website that offers an aerial tour that showcases the city and surrounding regions. The site also provides online booking capabilities and an uploadable RFP option. The site complements a new logo along with updated marketing and messaging materials that were unveiled earlier this year, focusing on the theme “RethiNK,” an attempt to attract meeting planners to consider Northern Kentucky as a meeting destination.
