Short Takes

Museums & Attractions
  • Through April 20, the University of Virginia Art Museum in Charlottesville is featuring the exhibit Landscape of Slavery: The Plantation in American Art, which examines plantation-related works of art from the 18th century to the present. The exhibition evaluates plantation images in the context of the history of landscape painting while addressing their possible impact on race relations in the U.S. This exhibit was organized by Angela Mack, deputy director for curatorial affairs at the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, S.C., and will be traveling to that museum from May to August. For more information, call 434.924.3592 or visit www.virginia.edu.

  • Wimberley Zipline Adventures recently debuted in Wimberley, Texas as a walking tour and thrill ride. The main attraction is a zip line suspended between two mountains where participants glide on a series of five wire cables that start at 250 feet and go to 875 feet long at up to 100 feet above the ground. The first step is a flight school where everyone is outfitted with the proper gear—mountaineering harness, lanyard and pulley system—followed by an eco walking tour that explains the local geography and a short history of the Wimberley area. The tour culminates with the zip adventure. Tours are by appointment and open to groups. For more information, call 512.847.9990 or visit www.wimberleyzipline.com.
