A flurry of new convention centers and hotels are opening across Mexico, and renovations are in full swing at a number of properties.

Mexico City offers 48,000 hotel rooms and more than 645 hotels, and in the last few years, the city has opened from 30 to 40 new hotels and more are on the way. Four Points by Sheraton Perinorte is one of the city’s newest hotels, while upcoming properties include Mexico City Marriott Reforma, opening later this year; St. Regis Mexico City, opening in January; a Hotel Indigo by InterContinental Hotels, opening next year; and a Ritz-Carlton property with a residential component, scheduled to open in 2011. Presidente InterContinental Mexico City also plans to complete an additional tower with 240 guest units, meeting facilities and a spa by mid-2009.

In Guadalajara, one of the city’s main convention venues, Expo Guadalajara, is growing under a renovation and expansion project that will add over 150,000 square feet of space by the end of the year. Additionally, Presidente InterContinental Guadalajara is undergoing a renovation, and new properties in the city include a Fiesta Americana, which opened last year. The Pan-American Games of 2011 will be held in Guadalajara, and additional guest rooms are coming on-line to meet demand. The city plans to have a total of 22,000 hotel rooms by the time of the event.

In Monterrey, new hotels include the Fiesta Inn Fundidora and NH Valle, and Four Points by Sheraton Monterrey is also in the works.

In Puebla, a new convention and exhibition center is expected to open in 2009. La Purificadora, a 26-room boutique hotel with a rooftop bar, also recently opened in the city, and Crowne Plaza Puebla was reflagged Presidente InterContinental Puebla in March.

In Merida, Hotel Indigo Merida Hacienda Misne recently opened in a restored 100-year-old building that was once a hacienda. Merida Marriott Hotel is scheduled to open in 2010.

In San Miguel de Allende, Rosewood Hotels and Resorts will operate Rosewood San Miguel de Allende, which will be part of a mixed-use development currently under construction and scheduled to open in late 2009. The hotel will have 15 guest rooms, 46 suites and two 1,700-square-foot presidential suites.
