Short Takes

Museums

  • Charlotte’s Mint Museums are expanding and will anchor the Wachovia South Tryon project being developed, which will include condominiums, retail establishments and an office complex. There will be two floors of galleries, one dedicated to the Mint Museum of Craft + Design and one dedicated to the Mint Museum of Art. The Craft + Design museum will relocate from 10,000 square feet of gallery space in its current North Tryon Street facility into 18,000 square feet of gallery space in the new building on the Center City cultural campus. Also included in the cultural plaza will be the Bechtler Museum, the Afro-American Cultural Center and a 1,200-seat theater managed by the Performing Arts Center with the North Carolina Dance Theatre as a primary tenant. The new facility for the Mint Museums will encompass about 145,000 square feet and will host major traveling exhibitions. The new Center City building is slated for completion in early 2010 and a grand opening set for fall 2010. For more information, call 704.337.2000 or visit www.mintmuseum.org.
