Helen Miller
Iowa State Representative from the 49th District
Des Moines and Fort Dodge, Iowa

Describe your event.
This was the annual meeting of the National Organization of Black Elected Legislative Women (NOBEL/Women). African-American members of state legislatures networked, had education sessions on issues and exchanged legislative ideas at the Renaissance Savery Hotel.

Why did you decide to host the meeting in Des Moines?
It is the state capital, so it’s a natural setting for state legislators.

What surprised you the most about Des Moines?
I know the city and expected everyone to be accommodating, which they were.

What did your attendees seem to enjoy the most?
Its location and proximity to everything.

Was anybody particularly helpful? Barbara Eslick, director of sales at Renaissance Savery Hotel.

What other types of groups would fit well with the hotel or convention center?
Those looking for a smaller, intimate setting with easy access to attractions.

What were some of the unique off-site venues that you used?
The Pioneer Hi-Bred facility [the world’s leading developer and supplier of advanced plant genetics to farmers worldwide] in Johnston; the Caucus Iowa Exhibit at the State Historical Building; and the Terrace Hill Governor’s Mansion for a reception.

Did you incorporate any interesting excursions into the agenda?
We visited the three-day Des Moines Arts Festival [held every June with 175 professional artists, the Interrobang Film Festival, performing arts, live music, food booths, art activities, a sculpture garden and a fireworks display] and the Prairie Meadows Racetrack & Casino in Altoona. We also did a Saturday morning power walk to the downtown Des Moines Farmers’ Market.

Would you return?
Definitely.
