  • Westin Book Cadillac Detroit (313.442.1600; www.starwoodhotels.com) is scheduled to open in October following completion of a $180 million renovation of the historic Book Cadillac Hotel. A member of the National Registry of Historic Buildings, the Italian Renaissance-style hotel, originally built in 1924 by the Book brothers, became the tallest building in Detroit, as well as the tallest hotel in the world. The hotel will feature 455 guest rooms and 39,000 square feet of meeting and event space, including three ballrooms and three executive boardrooms.

  • The MGM Grand Detroit (313.465.1777; www.mgmgranddetroit.com) casino hotel debuted last October with 400 guest rooms, including 56 corner suites and nine rooftop VIP suites; a resort-style spa; and five bars and lounges, featuring signature restaurants by celebrity chefs Wolfgang Puck and Michael Mina. MGM Grand Detroit offers a 30,000-square-foot meetings and events center for up to 1,500 people. The 14,000-square-foot grand ballroom is surrounded by a number of salon rooms, executive boardrooms and a prefunction area. The boardrooms feature plasma screens and wireless or hardwired high-speed Internet access.

  • MotorCity Casino Hotel (313.237.7711; www.motorcitycasino.com) opened its upscale hotel and expanded gaming area last November. The hotel features 400 guest rooms. An 8,000-square-foot spa opened in April. MotorCity Casino Hotel offers 67,000 square feet of function and banquet space, including prefunction areas, seven meeting rooms and two boardrooms accommodating up to 20 people each. MotorCity’s grand ballroom can seat more than 1,200 for dinner.

  • The Greektown Casino-Hotel (877.424.5554; www.greektowncasino.com) is scheduled to open in the beginning of 2009, offering 25,000 square feet of function space; a 1,100-seat live theater; a 30-story, 400-room hotel tower; 10 meeting rooms; and two restaurants. In September, the hotel’s expanded gaming area opened with a total 100,000 square feet of gaming space. The gaming area is still open during construction.

  • Doubletree Guest Suites Fort Shelby/Detroit Downtown (313.963.5600; www.doubletree.com) is slated to open in December following an $80 million restoration to return it to its former glory as the 1917-built Pick-Fort Shelby Hotel. The hotel will include a 22,000-square-foot IACC-certified conference center and 204 guest suites.
