Planner's Perspective

Describe your event.
It was an executive staff retreat at Madden’s on Gull Lake. Our CEO, the executive vice presidents, senior vice presidents and vice presidents, along and their spouses, attended.

Why did you decide to host the meeting in Brainerd Lakes?
It’s easy to drive there from the Twin Cities. Brainerd has some of the best golf courses in Minnesota.

What surprised you the most?
The best surprise is how nice the golf villa rooms and meeting space are. Also, the staff is so professional and really helped put together a first-class meeting—the kind this group expects.

What did your attendees enjoy the most?
They enjoyed the location, being on Gull Lake and the beautiful golf courses, and the respectful way the Madden’s staff treats everyone. They go the extra step to help you with anything you need.

What were some of the unique off-site venues that you used?
We had a cocktail reception outside by the lake at Ivan’s on the Bay and dinner in their private room that looks out on the lake. It was outstanding. The catering staff worked hard to produce a first-class event for us.

What outdoor activities and team-building programs did you incorporate into the agenda? We had what they call the Mini-Olympics at the property, which includes shuffleboard, lawn bowling and croquet. Everyone got into the competition and wanted to win. It was a great event and really a lot of fun.

How does Brainerd Lakes compare to other destinations where you have held meetings?
This group has met in Banff, Alberta, and at the American Club in Kohler, Wis. Both are five-star resorts with beautiful scenery and ambiance. They like Madden’s just as much because it has the same things to offer—great scenery, great rooms, great food and great golf.

Would you return?
Yes, we’re definitely returning for our June 2009 meeting and hopefully our 2010 meeting.

Do you have any advice for other planners who might bring a meeting to Brainerd Lakes?
I would encourage planners to go to Madden’s and the Brainerd area. Once you see it, you’ll like it.
