Planner's Perspective

More Coverage

Dave Boehm
executive director
Wisconsin Juvenile Officers Association
Grafton, Wis.

Describe your event.
It was the Wisconsin Juvenile Officers Association (WJOA) conference, in which approximately 150 people attended over the three-day event. It was held at Chula Vista Resort & Conference Center in Wisconsin Dells. The conference is designed to train and update attendees concerning juveniles and changes in the law.

Why did you decide to host the meeting in Wisconsin Dells?
Because it’s centrally located. We have had conferences at Chula Vista before, and we have had a great experience.

What surprised you most about Wisconsin Dells?
Regarding surprises, there were none. We knew the staff at Chula Vista was going to be terrific and very helpful, and they were.

What did your attendees seem to enjoy the most?
They like that they have a lot of options here. They can hit the waterparks, go shopping or do whatever else they like.

What other types of groups would fit well with the property?
I think any type of group, from large to small, would be very happy at Chula Vista.

How does Wisconsin Dells compare to other cities where you have hosted meetings?
Wisconsin Dells, being centrally located, works out great for us. We have also held conferences throughout Wisconsin and also found the other hotels to be very accommodating and have had great service.

Did you incorporate any interesting activities or excursions into the agenda? Chula Vista organized a free riverboat trip for our organization. Many took advantage of this. Many also had fun at the huge waterpark at Chula Vista.

Would you return?
You bet. As far as returning to Chula Vista, we already are contracted with them for 2009. We are also in negotiations with them and other hotels for 2010 and 2011.

Do you have any advice for other planners who might bring a meeting to Wisconsin Dells?
My suggestion for others planning meetings here would be to book early. Talk with the Wisconsin Dells CVB. Let them know what you need for your group, and they’ll get it all done. The Wisconsin Dells CVB staff bent over backwards for us.
