- DMB Associates and Gaylord Entertainment (www.gaylordentertainment.com) announced an agreement to develop a new destination resort with convention facilities in Mesa. The resort, which is expected to be the largest in the state, is to include an 18-hole golf course designed by Tom Fazio.
- A $60 million renovation and expansion was unveiled in October at the Omni Tucson National Golf Resort & Spa (520.297.2271; www.omnihotels.com) in Tucson. The resort features a redesigned main lobby, a new grand ballroom and new guest rooms, bringing its total to 279 rooms and villas. The project also included a clubhouse renovation and a new prop shop. A second 18-hole golf course opened at the resort in 2006.
- The Four Seasons Scottsdale at Troon North (480.515.5700; www.fourseasons.com) completed a $14 million renovation that included the refurbishment of its 210 guest rooms and suites. The room refurbishment includes wireless Internet access, MP3 player docking stations, flat-screen TVs and other enhancements. The two championship golf courses at the adjacent Troon North Golf Club emerged from a two-year redesign and renovation.
- The Camelback Inn, A JW Marriott Resort & Spa (480.948.1700; www.camelbackinn.com) in Scottsdale put the finishing touches on a $50 million renovation in October that included a complete redesign of its 20,000-square-foot Grand Ballroom and the addition of two new restaurants. The resort’s Camelback Golf Club offers two 18-hole championship golf courses, a practice facility and a clubhouse with meeting and event space for up to 300 people.
- The Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Gainey Ranch (480.444.1234; www.hyattt.com) will complete a $50 million renovation at the end of the year. The resort features a new spa with 19 treatment rooms, a new executive boardroom, a new restaurant serving Southwest cuisine, renovated guest rooms and a redesigned main ballroom. The resort offers a 27-hole championship golf course.
- The Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort (602.870.8188; www.pointehilton.com) in Phoenix is expected to unveil a 22,000-square-foot meeting facility called the Highland Center this month.
California
- Rancho Las Palmas Resort (760.568.2727; www.rancholaspalmas.com) in Rancho Mirage completed a $35 million renovation that included the refurbishment of all guest rooms and suites and the addition of Splashtopia, a water complex.
- Fairmont Hotels & Resorts (www.fairmont.com) announced plans to build a 300-room luxury resort next to the Classic Club Golf Course, site of the annual Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, in Palm Desert. The resort is expected to open in 2011.
- The Resort at Pelican Hill opened adjacent to the 36-hole Pelican Hill Golf Club, which was designed by Tom Fazio and made its debut last year near Newport Beach. The luxury property offers 128 bungalows and 204 villas as well as 20,000 square feet of meeting space and a restaurant serving Northern Italian cuisine.
- The 144-room Carmel Valley Ranch (831.625.9500; www.carmelvalleyranch.com) in Carmel reopened its Pete Dye-designed golf course after a multimillion-dollar renovation and restoration. The adjoining clubhouse has also been renovated.
- Opened earlier this year adjacent to Legoland California in Carlsbad, the Sheraton Carlsbad (760.827.2440; www.grandpacificresorts.com) offers 250 guest rooms, 13 suites, 25,000 square feet of meeting space, tennis courts, an Olympic-size swimming pool and a restaurant with an ocean view. The property is across from a recently opened 18-hole championship golf course, The Crossings at Carlsbad.
- Construction is under way on the 582-room Terranea Resort (www.terranea.com) in Rancho Palos Verdes near Los Angeles. The oceanfront property will include 63,000 square feet of meeting space and a nine-hole golf course with a golf school and training facility.
- The Indian Wells Golf Resort (760,346.4653; www.indianwellsgolfresort.com) in Indian Wells wrapped up a $61 million expansion and renovation of its golf facilities. Along with the restoration of its two golf courses, the project included a new putting course, practice facility and clubhouse with multiple restaurants, a pro shop and indoor and outdoor meeting space. The golf courses and facilities are adjacent to the Miramonte Resort, Hyatt Grand Champions Resort, Indian Wells Hotel and Renaissance Esmeralda Resort.
Hawaii
- The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel (808.882.7222; www.maunakeabeachhotel.com), which has been closed for repairs of earthquake damage, is expected to reopen this month on the island of Hawaii. Also set to reopen is the resort’s Mauna Kea Golf Course, which has undergone a renovation that not only included the fairways and greens, but the adjoining clubhouse and restaurant.
- Maui’s The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua (808.669.6200; www.ritzcarlton.com) reopened earlier this year after a $160 million renovation, which included the addition of a new spa and restaurant. The resort’s 463 guest rooms feature an all-new design with wood floors and travertine bathrooms.
New Mexico
- The Hilton Santa Fe Golf Resort at Buffalo Thunder Resort (505.455.5555; www.hilton.com), a 390-room resort with two 18-hole golf courses, opened in September at the Pojoaque Pueblo north of Santa Fe. The resort also offers an events center, theater, Indian Cultural Center, full-service spa, casino, two swimming pools and equestrian trails.
- The Isleta Casino & Resort (877.747.5382; www.isletaeagle.com) in Albuquerque completed an expansion that includes a 200-room luxury hotel, three restaurants, two swimming pools and over 30,000 square feet of meeting space. The hotel is adjacent to the Isleta Eagle Golf Course.
Washington
- The Lodge at Suncadia (509.649.8400; www.suncadia.com) opened at the Suncadia resort community 80 miles east of Seattle. The 254-room property offers 20,000 square feet of meeting space, a swim and fitness center and two golf courses.
- Chambers Bay Golf Course (253.798.4050; www.chambersbaygolf.com) opened in University Place, just west of Tacoma. The 18-hole, Scottish links-style golf course offers panoramic views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains and includes a practice facility and a clubhouse with indoor banquet space for up to 60 people. Up to 500 people can be accommodated in a tented event pavilion and outdoor patio.
Mexico
- Jack Nicklaus Design (www.nicklaus.com) is creating two 18-hole golf courses with fairways along ocean cliffs that will be part of Quivira, a master-planned resort community under development in Los Cabos. The first of the golf courses is scheduled to open in 2010.
Western Canada
- The Quaaout Resort & Conference Centre (250.679.3090; www.quaaout.com), located in the Shuswap Lakes area between Salmon Arm and Kamloops, British Columbia, opened the 18-hole, championship Talking Rock golf course last year. The 72-room resort operated by the Little Shuswap Indian First Nations Band, offers a spa, restaurant, dinner theater and 5,000 square feet of meeting space.
