Describe your event.

Our event was the International Bison Conference, which is a gathering of bison producers and enthusiasts that occurs every five to seven years in a different location, alternating between the U.S. and Canada. Nearly 600 people attended from seven countries and 36 states. The event educates attendees about the bison industry, celebrates and promotes the bison and highlights the camaraderie among bison enthusiasts.

Why did you decide to hold the event in Rapid City? Rapid City was selected due to the region being very bison-oriented and its close proximity to Custer State Park, which many consider to be the birthplace of the modern bison industry. Another plus was the availability of venues, activities and events in the Black Hills. Best Western Ramkota Hotel was the main hotel and convention center.

What were some unique off-site venues that you used? Opening ceremonies were at Mount Rushmore. Many attendees stayed for the lighting of the faces that occurred later that evening. We organized the Plains, Trains and Tatanka Wagon Train through Custer State Park. More than 150 people toured the backcountry for three days and four nights on wagons and horseback four days before the conference.

Would you return to Rapid City? We would be happy to return!

Do you have any advice for other planners who might bring an event to Rapid City? Plan ahead and plan early. The choices and options for meeting facilities and venues can be overwhelming.
