Planner Q&A: Riviera Maya

More Coverage

Bill Boyd, President and CEO, Sunbelt Motivation & Travel, Dallas

Event Overview: Sunbelt recently orchestrated an incentive program for 140 top producers of a medical sales company. The incentive program was held at the Playacar Resort.

Meetings West: Why did you decide to hold the event at Playacar in the Riviera Maya?
Bill Boyd: This facility was chosen due to its proximity to the ferry that goes to Cozumel. It was also chosen because it was an all-inclusive property that provided added value for the sponsoring company. The program was a major success.

Do you have any tips for other planners about the customs process?
There were no concerns with customs. My advice for others shipping product or program supplies to any destination in Mexico is to use a broker and ship well in advance of the program dates. The money spent is well worth the peace of mind it brings.

What were some of the highlights?
The attendees enjoyed golf, the beach and shopping in Playa del Carmen. A tour to Tulum was also included in the program.

What local suppliers did you work with?
We use IVI as our DMC in Mexico. We have found them to be creative, competitive and responsive to our every need.

Do you have any advice for other planners arranging events in the Riviera Maya?
Mexico has caught up with Hawaii in terms of infrastructure, service and quality venues. The destination is safe and secure. The people are warm and friendly, and they are knowledgeable about incentives and their importance to the overall tourism grid. Plan ahead and pay careful attention to detail, and the program will work magic.
