Meetings West: What are some of the best reasons for planners to consider Cancun?
Mercedes Pelleya: As an incentive for meetings, cost is always a major priority for a corporate meeting planner. Not having to pay the VAT (value-added tax) in Mexico represented thousands of dollars in savings from the bottom line. Another great selling point is the frequency of direct flights from just about any airport in the U.S. There is also so much to do for all ages and tastes in Cancun—great restaurants, great sites and great beaches.
What was your experience with customs?
Customs is a little tricky; you must hire a good forwarding company to handle your shipments and get them through customs. Everything has to be spelled out. If you bring in premium items to be given out to your group, you have to spell out country of origin, cost, etc., and certain taxes apply depending on the country of origin.
What kind of off-site events and activities did you plan for the group?
I had dine-arounds and the choice of restaurants was great—too many to name. As far as excursions and activities, I gave my group the choice, and there are so many for all tastes. CEO [Corporate Event Organizers], a great DMC, took care of all my excursions and activities, such as a visit to Tulum, catamaran sailings and a day at Maroma Paradise, which offers horseback riding, speed boat rentals and a bunch of other activities. I have used CEO on three of my trips to that area. They make it so easy for me.
What advice would you give other planners bringing groups to Cancun?
Take advantage of what Cancun and the surrounding areas have to offer. The service is the best in the region, and the people are great and so friendly. And what is more, you will be a star for bringing them there.
