Kent Allaway, Director, Meetings and Trade Shows, Produce Marketing Association, Newark, Del.
Event Overview: Produce Marketing Association has a large membership in Mexico, which meets once or twice per year in a different city. Allaway arranged the recent country council meeting for Mexican nationals at the W Mexico City. It was a smaller meeting for roughly 30 attendees, who had a great experience.
Meetings West: What makes Mexico City a great place to gather?
Kent Allaway: It’s easy to get lift in and out of Mexico City. It’s a little more of an international city, so everyone feels more at home there, whether you are a U.S. citizen, a Mexican citizen or from anywhere else. We find they understand the hospitality [concept] a little bit better. The Mexico Tourism Board and the local Mexico City Tourism Ministry are a big help. Obviously it’s not a resort destination, but it’s a great business destination.
Did you have any concerns about bringing a group to Mexico City?
I don’t think it’s any different than any other large international city. You have to know where you’re going. You have to pay attention to what’s going on around you. Transportation can be a little hairy. But I don’t see it as any different than going to Beijing or Taiwan.
What did your attendees enjoy the most about Mexico City?
There is a plethora of great restaurants there. We always get positive feedback about dining options. The hotels definitely get it and have great service.
What suggestions do you have for others planners organizing events in Mexico City?
If you’re new to that part of the world, be aware that things are a little different there. The Mexico Tourism Board and the hotel you’re using can be great resources.
