Wayne Wallgren, Principal, WorldWide Incentives, Dallas
Event Overview: WorldWide Incentives recently arranged an incentive program for the U.S. marketing arm of a major Mexican manufacturer. It consisted of 25 customers and included tours of the parent company’s facilities in the area. The Camino Real Guadalajara was the host hotel.
Meetings West: Did you have any concerns about bringing a group to Guadalajara?
Wayne Wallgren: Initially I was concerned that the area might not have the charm and points of interest to keep the group’s attention. That turned out not to be the case.
Do you have any tips for dealing with customs?
I always recommend that a customs broker be used. The benefits far outweigh the cost of the service.
What were some of the highlights of Guadalajara?
The architecture and charm gave the city a special feel.
Did you arrange any interesting off-site events and activities?
We used a hacienda that is part of one of the distilleries in Tequila, about 45 minutes outside Guadalajara. It was perfect. We also did a tour of the agave fields and a tequila museum and distillery.
Do you have any tips about working with local suppliers?
One of the key issues to keep in mind is to communicate clearly. Yes, your supplier in Guadalajara may speak English, but don’t take that to mean their comprehension is at the same level as their ability to speak. Often you will find that there is a gap in what you think you said and meant, and what they think they understood. Don’t underestimate how important this is to the success of a program. Make sure everyone is clear.
Is there anything else planners should know about Guadalajara?
Guadalajara is an amazing city. It is easy to make a group fall in love with it.
