SOUTH CAROLINA

Myrtle Beach

  • The new mile-long Oceanfront Boardwalk and Promenade (843.918.1000; www.cityofmyrtlebeach.com) is slated for completion by June 2010 at an estimated cost of $6 million.
  • Myrtle Beach International Airport (843.448.1580; www.flymyrtlebeach.com/expansion.cfm) will expand its passenger terminal from seven to 12 gates. The $130 million project is scheduled to begin in 2010.

Charleston and the Resort Islands

  • Founders Hall (843.852.2965; www.foundershallcharleston.com), a brand-new event venue located on the grounds of Charles Towne Landing, provides space for large receptions and meetings.
  • The new Holiday Inn Express Mt. Pleasant-Charleston (843.375.2600; www.ichotelsgroup.com), the first LEED-certified hotel in South Carolina, is located at the foot of the Cooper River Bridge between the Isle of Palms and Charleston.

Hilton Head Island

  • The 323-room Hilton Oceanfront Resort (843.842.8000; www.hiltonoceanfrontresort.com), which has nearly 25,000 square feet of meeting space, completed $3 million in renovations to two of its restaurants, HH Prime and the XO Lounge, as well as the trendy Palmetto Market, a casual cafe featuring purchase-and-go items.
  • The Hilton Garden Inn Hilton Head (843.837.8111; www.hiltongardeninn.com) recently wrapped up a renovation, including updates to guest rooms and meeting space.

NORTH CAROLINA

New Bern and Craven County

  • The Hilton New Bern/Riverfront (252.638.3585; www1.hilton.com), which has 16,000 square feet of meeting space, recently completed a multimillion-dollar renovation of its 171 guest rooms.
  • Candlewood Suites New Bern (252.638.8166; www.candlewoodsuites.com) is scheduled to open in early 2010 with 81 suites.  
  • The North Carolina History Education Center (252.514.4900; www.tryonpalace.org/historyeducationcenter) will debut this year during New Bern’s 300th anniversary. The story of the Old North State will come alive in this 60,000-square-foot learning center adjacent to the Tryon Palace Gardens on the Trent River.

Wilmington and the Cape Fear Coast

  • Construction of the 107,000-square-foot, riverfront Wilmington Convention Center (910.341.4030; www.wilmingtonnc.gov) is under way. The center is expected to open in September 2010. The facility will feature approximately 63,000 square feet of function space.
  • Thalian Hall (910.343.3660; www.thalianhall.com), an historic theater erected in 1858, will reopen this year after a restoration and renovation project.
  • Coastline Conference and Event Center (910.762.5184; www.nccoastalevents.com) is the new name of the former Coast Line Convention Center.
  • A 125-room Courtyard Marriott (www.marriott.com/courtyard) is slated to open in spring 2011. The property will have meeting space for small groups.
  • A 191-room Hilton Garden Inn (www.hiltongardeninn.com) is slated to open in summer 2011 at the north end of the Carolina Beach Boardwalk. The property will feature a ballroom that will seat up to 350 people and a 2,800-square-foot rooftop pavilion overlooking the ocean.
