  • The Ritz-Carlton, Charlotte (704.547.2244; www.ritzcarlton.com/charlotte) recently opened with 147 guest rooms and suites, and 12,000 square feet of meeting space, including a 7,000-square-foot ballroom. The LEED-certified property is four blocks from Charlotte Convention Center and is connected to the North Carolina Blumenthal Performing Arts Center at Founders Hall via an over-street walkway.
  • Hotel Sierra (www.hotel-sierra.com) will open five blocks from the Charlotte Convention Center this fall. The new lifestyle property will offer 163 suites near the Time Warner Cable Arena in Center City.
  • Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts and Culture (704.374.1565; www.ganttcenter.org) opened in January with exhibits about the art, history and heritage of African-Americans in the Piedmont South.
  • Bechtler Museum of Modern Art (704.353.9207; www.bechtler.org) debuted in January with an impressive modern art collection that includes works by Picasso, Calder, Warhol and others. Four spacious floors near Charlotte Convention Center house the Bechtler family’s renowned collection, plus venues for events.
  • Knight Theater (704.379.1249; www.blumenthalcenter.org) is the new home for North Carolina Dance Theatre, and it adjoins the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art. With 1,150 seats, the theater features symphony and dance performances, lectures and films.
  • Mint Museum of Art-Uptown (704.337.2000; www.mintmuseum.org) will be unveiled in October as the new home of the Mint Museum of Craft and Design collections, plus collections of American, contemporary and European art. The new five-story, 145,000-square-foot facility is located in the business district.
  • A $31.6 million renovation of Discovery Place (704.372.0471; www.discoveryplace.org), a science and technology site in Center City, is scheduled for completion this summer. The project will include features such as a digital 3-D theater, a larger aquarium and new science lab stations.
  • LYNX light rail (www.charmeck.org) is expanding with the Blue Line Extension, also known as the Northeast Corridor line. The new route will transport passengers to Center City and other areas on the existing line.
  •  Charlotte Douglas International Airport (www.charlotteairport.com) is undergoing a $300 million makeover that’s adding terminal space and doubling the size of hourly parking decks, and pickup and drop-off lanes.
