Green with Envy

More Coverage

The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail (RTJGT) is the yellow brick road of golf. Snaking back and forth across the eastern half of Alabama from north to south, it encompasses 11 golf courses with a total of 468 holes of championship golf, each and every one of them designed with two goals in mind: to provide a flexible level of play to delight rank beginners and challenge champions alike, and to showcase the outstanding beauty of the state’s natural features.

Two of these courses lie within an easy drive of Birmingham. Although these greens receive much of the limelight, they are only two of the many highly rated courses within the metro region, home to a total of nearly 20 golf facilities. The greens of the Birmingham area are a winning choice year-round for team building and off-site meetings as well as post-event mingling and networking.

Ross Bridge Golf Resort is the newest member of the RTJGT, having opened in 2005. Located in Hoover, the course itself meanders through the breathtaking Shannon Valley around two lakes and an 80-foot waterfall. The 259-room Renaissance Ross Bridge Golf Resort & Spa offers 20,000 square feet of meeting space and a 12,000-square-foot spa.

Built on former steel-mining land amidst the Appalachian Mountains, the RTJGT’s Oxmoor Valley offers 54 challenging holes noteworthy for their many elevation changes. There are three courses, each with its own scenic features and particular puzzles. The tricky Ridge Course, although spectacularly beautiful, is not recommended for novices due to heavy tree cover and 150-foot elevation changes. The rolling Valley Course stretches for two miles down a lake-dotted valley. The Short Course is also known for its downhill shots. Oxmoor is located in Birmingham.

A 25-minute drive north of Birmingham in Oneonta, Limestone Springs Golf Club features some of the top-rated golf in the state. Its 18 holes comprise 225 acres of picturesque Appalachian Mountain country. Limestone welcomes tournaments of 24 to 140. Events as large as 120 can be accommodated in its pretty plantation-style clubhouse. Additionally, its Golf Cottage can host up to eight for overnight stays.

Award-winning Highland Park Golf was established in 1903, making it the oldest course in Alabama. Located right in Birmingham, it provides a convenient respite from the grind of a full conference schedule and boasts stunning views of the city. Its 18-hole course is considered to be fun for beginners while still capable of challenging seasoned golfers.
