Historic Hot Spots
Hampton Roads is overflowing with historic gems. Following are a few off-site options that reflect the past.
· Mariners’ Museum (757.596.2222; www.mariner.org) in Newport News is the largest maritime museum in North America. The facility includes the USS Monitor Center, which was completed in 2007. The ship was the first ironclad warship commissioned by the U.S. Navy. The ship fought its first battle against the Confederate ironclad ship, the CSS Virginia, in the Battle of Hampton Roads in 1862.

Short Takes
Museums & Attractions
· Florida’s Coral Gables Museum is slated to debut later this year. The museum will showcase the civic arts of architecture, urban design and planning, as well as historic and environmental preservation. The facility will consist of the city’s original police and fire station with additions including a courtyard off of the main lobby, a new 3,000-square-foot gallery and a 5,000-square-foot public plaza on the northwest corner of the complex. Both buildings will be LEED certified, restored and constructed utilizing environmental practices and materials.
