Short Takes - MidAmerica June 2010

Museums & Attractions

  • The University of Iowa Museum of Art, in Iowa City, is currently exhibiting Two Turntables and a Microphone, the work of Harry Allen, hip-hop journalist and Media Assassin of the group Public Enemy. In the 1980s, Allen captured the street culture of NYC and the beginnings of hip-hop with a camera. This exhibit features 40 of Allen’s photographs that represent the emergence of the music, culture and politics of this cultural phenomenon.
  • Further expanding upon the visual culture of the hip-hop scene, the exhibit also includes a digital show of the work of Lady Pink, one of the forerunners in graffiti art who paint-bombed NYC subway trains with so much artistry that she became a cult figure. Completing the exhibition is a display of original hip-hop show flyers, album covers and memorabilia that capture the history of hip-hop as a musical and cultural movement. The exhibit is being showcased through June 27 at the Black Box Theater, located on the third floor of the Iowa Memorial Union. For more information, call 319.335.1727.

  • Hilton Chicago received the 2009 Star of the Industry Award in Good Earthkeeping from the Illinois Hotel & Lodging Association for its environmental efforts. The Good Earthkeeping Award recognizes lodging properties that have developed a culture toward integrating superior environmental management practices that improve everyday operations. The hotel focuses on conservation in a number of areas: recycling, energy and water conservation, solid waste reduction, effluents and emissions, purchasing and business issues. To realize this goal, a green committee was formed, comprised of 15 hotel team members from various departments. In 2009, the hotel diverted 167 tons of recyclables from landfills, including paper/cardboard, glass, plastics/metals and miscellaneous items such as batteries and fluorescent bulbs. In addition, the green committee planted a rooftop garden, which supplies fresh herbs as well as vegetables to the kitchen for use in meal preparation.
