The Office of the Governor, Economic Development and Tourism (Texas Tourism) announced that there has been no impact to the state’s 624 miles of coastline from the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
“The oil slick remains at least 150 miles from Texas waters and is unlikely to spoil Texas beaches or wetlands,” Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson said in a statement. “So far, we have not had any negative impact here in Texas and we don't really anticipate much.”
Patterson’s office would lead any state response to the spill.
Projections at this time indicate that due to spring weather patterns, the oil will have an unsteady westward movement. The situation could change as summer approaches. At this time, impact, if any, to Texas beaches could be months away. Currently, all Texas beaches are not affected, and are open for business.
Texas Tourism is encouraging travelers not to cancel plans to visit the Lone Star State.
