Attractions Update

Oahu

  • The USS Arizona Memorial Visitor Center at Pearl Harbor will open in December. The $58 million museum and visitor center, which will be double the size of the older facility, is being designed to allow for a greatly expanded interpretation of the attack on Pearl Harbor and World War II in the Pacific.
  • Honolulu's renowned Bishop Museum recently reopened its Hawaiian Hall, a showcase for the world's largest collection of Native Hawaiian and Pacific-area artifacts. Presented on its three floors are items from throughout Hawaii's history, as well as traditional Hawaiian legends and quotes and art pieces from contemporary Hawaiian cultural practitioners. Hawaiian Hall also features Polynesian Hall, which traces the Pacific origins of the Hawaiian people.
  • On Oahu's North Shore, the Polynesian Cultural Center introduced a new night show called Ha: Breath of Life. With over 100 performers, the show features original costumes, music competitions, chants and dances produced by experts from each of the center's island village exhibits.

  • Hilo Hattie's flagship store on the Nimitz Highway recently added two meeting rooms, Hibiscus and Plumeria, equipped with 50-inch plasma screens, Internet access and audiovisual facilities. The rooms accommodate 75 people in each or can be combined to accommodate 200. The store also added a hula studio where small groups can take hula lessons.

Kauai

  • Opened last December, the Shops at Kukuiula Village in Poipu features specialty shops, galleries and restaurants in a landscaped setting with plantation-style architecture. The shopping complex also includes several outdoor areas with tropical plants and ocean views available for group events.
  • Groups can now enjoy rum-themed events at Koala Rum Company, which is located at the Kilohana Plantation in Lihue. Among the possibilities are receptions and team-building events that include sampling the different varieties of rum that are made from sugar cane grown on the island. Food delicacies can also be enjoyed, including rum cake and rum fudge sauce.

Maui

  • Cirque Polynesia opened a new 500-seat outdoor theater at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa. The 75-minute show presents fast-paced performances that include high-wire feats, acrobats, aerial illusionists, daredevil balancing acts and contortionists.

Big Island

  • A venue for experiencing the island's rich paniolo (cowboy) culture, Anna Ranch in the green hills of Waimea recently completed a new viewing platform for cocktail parties and receptions. Groups will also find gardens of native plants, historic buildings, a working blacksmith and 1,400 square feet of indoor meeting areas.
