Work on the new Outdoor Plaza at the Yakima Convention Center is under way and is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
The Outdoor Plaza is the centerpiece of Yakima’s Downtown Futures Initiative Phase IV, a program that has funded various improvements in downtown Yakima. It will add nearly 7,000 square feet of space to the convention center. The project includes a privacy rock wall, landscaping, colorful pavers, outdoor seating and overhead lighting. Major work is slated to be finished by late September with additional amenities completed by the end of this year.
Through a separate lodging tax grant from Yakima County, an additional $536,000 is being spent on interior improvements to the convention center, including new carpeting, wall dividers, upgrading public restrooms, lighting controls and sound equipment. The facility offers more than 41,000 square feet of meeting space.
