Museums & Attractions

  • The Honolulu Academy of Arts will be presenting Four Thousand Years of Southeast Asian Art from Sept. 9 to Jan. 9, 2011. On view will be approximately 150 works of art from Thailand and Cambodia, many of which have never been displayed at the museum. The exhibition will cover the artistic and cultural developments of three important Southeast Asian cultures—Ban Chiang, Khmer and Sukhothai—covering over more than 4,000 years, from Neolithic earthenware ceramics to a gold Buddhist sculpture.   • Eureka, Nev.'s Eureka Opera House is offering groups an alternate setting for meetings. Though the facility itself is more than 120 years old, the space for conventions and meetings is new and can accommodate up to 200, including the Diamond and Prospect meeting rooms. The meeting rooms also serve as the fine arts gallery for the Opera House's permanent fine arts collection. Groups can also use the Grand Hall Auditorium, which can accommodate 275 theater style or 250 for banquets. Historic elements such as the original projectors from the early days of the silent movies, the first talkies' projector and a carbon-arc spot light are on display.   • The Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort & Spa, in Santa Ana Pueblo, N.M., near Albuquerque, recently launched its Meet and Be Green program, which encourages guests and planners to make green choices for their meetings. As part of the program, planners and meeting attendees pledge to take 10 steps during their meeting, including eliminating disposable water bottles, selecting locally grown seasonal foods, using products with 100 percent recycled content, recycling during the meeting and minimizing shipping. For new meetings booked by Dec. 30 and held by March 31, 2011, groups participating in the program will be eligible for a 3 percent rebate on qualifying charges on the master bill.   • The Wedgewood Hotel & Spa in downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, is offering its Meetings in Vancouver Package, which includes guest room accommodations starting at $177 per person and includes complimentary value-added items, such as meeting space, breakfast and lunch as well as two coffee breaks.
