From the heights of zip lining to the depths of scuba diving, Puerto Rico serves up a smorgasbord of adventure activities for groups.
One of the island’s most popular DMCs, Destination Puerto Rico (787.982.1200), can organize everything from ATV tours to surf lessons. Many adventures are hosted at Hacienda Campo Rico (787.523.2001), where groups can head out horseback riding or zip lining, among other options.
The DMC can also arrange surfing lessons with a surfing pro at Pine Grove Beach, located at the end of Isla Verde.
"As a DMC, we have the flexibility of tweaking offerings to cater to our market, so we can offer a team-building twist to the activity," says Melissa Pueyo, sales manager for Destination Puerto Rico. "We can do basic surfing lessons with instructors where they try to catch a couple of waves or go into activities like rallies and paddle boarding that bring in the team-building effort."
Other team-building options include geo-trek activities using GPS systems, while adventures include kayaking on the bioluminescent Las Croabas Lagoon.
Dragonfly Adventures (787.889.7460) also organizes group activities, focusing efforts at the 17-acre Coco Rio (787.889.7430) off-site venue located on a 600-acre ranch, Hacienda Carabaldi. Adventures include horseback riding in El Yunque rainforest, ATV rides, zip lining and team-building activities. Coco Rio can host rainforest theme parties produced by Wizard Studios Caribbean in its 17,000 square feet of open space.
East Island Sailing Excursions (787.860.3434) offers half-day and full-day catamaran tours. The trip to Culebra on the east side of the island is a popular option. Culebra is home to Flamenco Beach and snorkeling haven Carlos Rosario Beach as well as the Culebra National Wildlife Refuge.
The company also offers dinner cruises and sunset sails on its sailing catamaran for up to 78 passengers. Other group options include trips to Vieques Island and glass-bottom boat tours.
For more outdoor adventure, ToroVerde Nature Adventure Park (787.867.2020) recently debuted in the Central Mountain range (La Cordillera Central) of Puerto Rico. ToroVerde boasts the second-longest zip line in the world, an eight-mile mountain bike trail, hiking and rappelling.
