Rock Ohio Caesars (ROC) recently announced their decision to move forward with plans for gaming developments in Cleveland and Cincinnati. Horseshoe Casino Cleveland is expected to open in early 2012 and will be the state’s first casino. It is slated to be located in the Historic Higbee Building on Public Square near the city’s entertainment district. ROC will also develop and operate a casino in downtown Cincinnati.

Sharonville Convention Center (513.771.7744) broke ground in November on a renovation and expansion. Slated for a first-phase completion in June and full completion in March 2012, its meeting and exhibit space will be increased from eight rooms with 28,000 square feet to 19 rooms with 65,000 square feet.

21c Museum Hotels is planning a 160-room hotel that will include an 8,000-square-foot contemporary art museum and meeting space in downtown Cincinnati’s historic Metropole Building. The hotel is slated for a 2012 opening.

At press time, the Residence Inn by Marriott Cincinnati Downtown (513.651.1234), with two meeting rooms totaling 1,150 square feet, was scheduled to open in the historic Phelps Building in March.
Cleveland

Work is under way on the Cleveland Medical Mart & Convention Center (216.875.6600), expected to open September 2013 on the site of the old Cleveland Convention Center. The new center is a partnership between Cuyahoga County and Chicago-based Merchandise Mart Properties. It will include a 100,000-square-foot medical mart and an adjoining convention center with 230,000 square feet of exhibit hall space and more than 90,000 square feet of meeting space.

The 162-suite InterContinental Suites Hotel Cleveland (216.707.4300), located on the grounds of Cleveland Clinic, will complete a six-month, multimillion-dollar renovation in May that will include enhancements to guest rooms, common areas and meeting rooms, a redesigned restaurant and bar, an expanded fitness center and the new Wi-Fi Cafe.

Sheraton Cleveland Airport Hotel (216.267.1500) at Cleveland-Hopkins International Airport completed a $3.5 million renovation last June. The project featured improvements to its more than 22,000 square feet of meeting space, including the addition of a new 2,500-square-foot ballroom; a redesign of the lobby and front entrance, restaurant, bar and business center; an expanded fitness center; and the renovation of the indoor swimming pool and terrace.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame (330.456.8207) plans to finish a $23.6 million expansion in 2013 that will take it from 83,000 square feet to 124,000 square feet. The project will include a new 10,800-square-foot Pro Football Research and Preservation Center, the renovation of 37,000 square feet of gallery space and new indoor and outdoor event spaces.
Sandusky

In March, Kalahari Resort in Sandusky (877.525.2427) broke ground on a $22 million expansion that will more than double the size of its convention center. Additions include 14 new meeting rooms and two new ballrooms totaling 50,000 square feet. The 120,000-square-foot addition will raise the convention center’s total square footage of space to 250,000, with meeting capacity ballooning from 2,200 to 5,200 attendees. The project is slated for completion in December.
Columbus

Concord Hospitality Enterprises (703.435.6293) broke ground on a SpringHill Suites by Marriott in Columbus as part of a joint venture with Continental Real Estate Companies. Slated to open this summer, the 136-suite hotel is being constructed according to LEED standards. The four-story property will showcase designs and colors inspired by nearby Ohio State University.
