I started here in late 2000, after spending about eight years covering the travel agent side of the industry, focusing on destination coverage. I’ve seen a lot of change in the time I’ve been in the industry, from the post-9/11 downturn to days of largesse and then the last recession, which I think has been by far the worst in terms of its impact on the industry. I’m starting to see the cycles now, shifting from buyer’s to seller’s and back to a buyer’s—and then to seller’s—market. It’s all very interesting, and I love the “people-focus” of the hospitality industry.
Most unusual aspect of your job: Going in so many directions at once. I love an atmosphere in which teamwork and fast decision-making are very important, and that’s what publishing is all about! Every day is an adventure and no two days are alike. I’m multitasking when I’m multitasking—in between multitasking some more.
Favorite book: I love reading Elmore Leonard books when I’m on the road.
Favorite food: I like just about everything, but a real good rib eye in a steakhouse is definitely my favorite.
Favorite TV show: The Sopranos was amazing. Currently, I’m a news junkie and also watch the Law & Order franchise during dinner, along with those somewhat creepy shows about hoarding, etc.
Favorite movie: Apocalypse Now
Most unique place you’ve been: Burma or Nepal
Favorite aspect of the meetings/travel industry: The people in it are generally in it for the love of travel and hospitality, and are very nice.
Pet peeve: Slowness (but I’ve got to work on my acceptance!)
One thing about you that most people don’t know: I’ve played classic rock and blues electric guitar since I was in seventh grade, but probably haven’t improved since high school.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received in our industry? It’s all about service.
What’s your favorite local/regional place to take a visitor to your area? Muir Woods, just north of the Golden Gate Bridge in Marin County.
Is there anything else you’d like to add that we’ve overlooked? I’m a big fan of little dogs now, and I’m not afraid to admit it!
