Healthcare Hubbub

When the 2,000-page federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was signed into law last year, the medical meetings industry had to add another set of regulations to its growing list of rules and restrictions.

The healthcare reform act contains language from the original Physician Payments Sunshine Act, which requires companies to begin recording any physician payments and "transfers of value" that are worth more than $10 starting Jan. 1, 2012, and to report them on March 31, 2013.

Improve Your Outlook

Our first use of Microsoft Outlook was in 1997, when we discovered it wrapped in relative obscurity within the release of Office 97. We were all happy to get the upgraded versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint, but none of us really knew anything about the "Little Program That Could."

Back in the mid-90s, our e-mail was handled down in the basement somewhere, our calendars were in neat little spiral binders, to-do lists on scraps of paper, and contacts managed in bundles of business cards wrapped in rubber bands. Someone suggested managing our e-mail in Outlook, and we began to discover what a powerful program it can be.

Planners Gather for Green Engagement

Game On! The sixth annual Green Meeting Industry Council (GMIC) Sustainable Meetings Conference, which drew over 300 participants, including 60 virtual attendees, focused on what Tamara Kennedy-Hill, executive director of the GMIC, called "total engagement."

The conference, held at the Doubletree Portland hotel in Portland, Ore., Feb. 20-23, brought together exhibitors, industry leaders, suppliers and planners for more than three days of panels, breakout sessions, interactive case studies and CSR team-building events.
