Casinos Close as South Braces for Floods
As cities and towns along the Mississippi River prepare for record-high water levels that are expected to crest next week, the Mississippi Gaming Commission ordered that nine casinos in Tunica, Miss., close indefinitely, putting 5,000 rooms out of commission.

While everyone knows that beachside locations easily fulfill vacation objectives, it may come as a surprise to learn that they can play a big part in fulfilling business objectives as well. |
Team building, often with an environmental or CSR (corporate social responsibility) angle, is an increasing emphasis at many coastal destinations. Activity choices can range from picking up beach litter to improv-inspired training and building sandcastles.

Jake Ogley was named director of sales for the Courtyard by Marriott in Stuart. Ogley brings more than 18 years of hospitality experience to the Courtyard Stuart team. His most recent position was that of sales and operations manager for the Lake Opechee Inn and Spa in Lakeport, N.H., where he had previously served as the operations manager.
The JW Marriott Hotel Miami appointed Alison Colberg director of social event sales. Prior to her appointment, Colberg served as catering sales manager at Lyon + Lyon, a full-service catering and event planning company in South Florida.

Government Trends

Perhaps even more so than those who plan meetings for other types of organizations, government meeting planners are heavily guided by perception issues, market trends, sustainability concerns and other factors when making site decisions.
According to Charles Sadler, executive director and CEO of the Society of Government Meeting Professionals (SGMP), government planners are once again considering all cities and lodging sectors for their meetings. The post-financial crisis days of blacklisted cities are over, with such destinations as Las Vegas, Orlando, San Francisco and Atlantic City back in the running for government business.
