GBTA Ranks Destinations on Travel Taxes
The five U. S. destinations with the lowest discriminatory travel taxes—those imposed specifically on travel-related services—are all in California, while the highest are found in Boston, New York, Minneapolis, Chicago and Portland, Ore., according to a recent GBTA Foundation survey of the top 50 U.S. travel markets.

Depending on which Angeleno answers the question, parts of L.A. can be two hours from other parts of L.A. All of the geographical expanses attached to the “City of Angels” moniker encompass too much territory for one to possibly generalize, which is why Dorothy Parker referred to L.A. as 72 suburbs in search of a city. |
This part of Southern California cannot, however, be understood without the beach, and plenty of municipalities associated with Los Angeles provide planners with quick access to the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), downtown and the coastline. Both the South Bay Area and the Westside are two such areas; groups are driving distance from Los Angeles proper, should they desire to venture in that direction, but if they want to set up shop near the shifting sands, plenty of opportunities await.

Happenings – LA: South Bay, Westside
Long Beach
- The Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center (562.436.3636; www.longbeachcc.com) is receiving $5 million in upgrades of the Promenade area in order to provide a more sophisticated look with a boutique-style ambience. Steel Case furniture throughout the Promenade will create “mini pods” for attendees to meet and network. The Savor Cafe, the Green Room and the Terrace Theatre will also receive upgrades.
- The Westin Long Beach (562.436.3000; www.westinlongbeachhotel.com) is undergoing a $10 million overhaul. New restaurant and lobby furniture are being installed and the first half of a room renovation will be finished in February 2012. The other half will commence in November 2012 and be finished in February 2013.
