MGM Asks to Demolish Vegas Tower

MGM Resorts International is seeking county approval to demolish the unopened Harmon hotel tower at its CityCenter complex in Las Vegas, claiming that structural defects in the building make it not worth salvaging.

Plans submitted to the county cite a structural report from an engineer that says the building would not withstand a strong earthquake. MGM proposed imploding the building within six months and estimates that it would take about four months to clean up the damage.

“We have been assured by demolition experts that a properly executed implosion will not pose health or safety problems for residents, visitors or adjacent businesses,” said MGM Resorts Spokesman Gordon Absher,

The Harmon was originally planned as a boutique hotel with condominiums at CityCenter, a hotel complex that opened on the Strip in December 2009.
