State of the Market

In the Spotlight

By MARIA LENHART

After years of dealing with corporate concerns that it’s not conducive for serious meetings, Hawaii is poised to turn such thinking on its head.

When the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum convenes Nov. 11-13 at the Hawaii Convention Center, Hawaii will step into the global spotlight as a gathering place for top political and business leaders from around the world.

“This is the most important convention in Hawaii’s history, hands down,” says Michael Murray, vice president of sales and marketing for the corporate, meetings and incentive division of the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau (HVCB), of the upcoming conference, expected to draw 20,000 attendees from 21 countries.

At the same time, hotels and resorts throughout the islands have been staying ahead of the curve with enhancements and renovations, enticing groups with state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor venues, club lounges, spas and restaurants showcasing locally sourced cuisine prepared by celebrated chefs.

Mid-Pacific Meetings

By MARIA LENHART

While APEC will showcase Hawaii as an international meetings destination, mid-Pacific meetings have already been a growing area for the state, according to Joe Davis, general manager of the Hawaii Convention Center.

“We’ve become a real international gathering place—the perception that we’re distant is no longer there,” he says. “The fastest-growing economies are Asia/Pacific, so Hawaii is a great place to link up.”

Angela Vento, regional director of sales and marketing for Starwood Hawaii, agrees, noting that her hotels are seeing more corporate customers booking meetings designed to aid their expansion plans into Asia/Pacific destinations.
