Her father, who emigrated to California from Italy, had a plentiful artichoke farm on the San Mateo County coast, where she was born and raised. Artichokes are still her favorite vegetable, and she loves taking road trips to the coast, which she says seems like a world away from nearby metros like San Francisco and Silicon Valley.
