Winter Warm-Up

By LAURA DEL ROSSO

Despite economic jitters in the U.S. and around the world, mountain destinations in the Western U.S. and Canada are expecting more meeting groups and individual travelers to head to their snowy slopes and to see growth in hotel and resort occupancies this upcoming winter season.

“What we are seeing, despite the uncertainty in the overall political and economic marketplace, are advance reservations that continue to look strong,” says Ralf Garrison, director of MTRIP, a Colorado-based destination travel research company that specializes in mountain resorts.

Mountain Milestones

Here are some of the new developments happening at mountain resorts in the Western U.S. and Canada.

CALIFORNIA
Vail Resorts is investing $30 million in projects at Northstar-at-Tahoe (www.northstarattahoe.com) on the north side of Lake Tahoe for the upcoming winter season. In addition to new ski trails and a high-speed quad chairlift, a new mountain restaurant near the top of the Tahoe Zephyr lift will open with indoor seating for 500 and outdoor seating for 200. The retail complex is expanding with Patagonia and Burton shops and a larger North Face store. A signature restaurant will be added to the Village at Northstar.

Nearby is the The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe (www.ritzcarlton.com), which opened in December 2009, the first new resort for the Lake Tahoe area in several decades. It includes Manzanita, by award-winning San Francisco chef Traci Des Jardins and a fitness center and spa, which recently expanded its treatment offerings. An inter-mountain gondola connects Village-at-Northstar and the 170-room Ritz-Carlton.

COLORADO

  • Gateway Canyons Resort near Grand Junction is planning a renovation of its existing facilities and building additional resort amenities. To date, the resort has offered a mix of accommodations, ranging from value-priced rooms to upscale multiroom suites. Under new management, the guest accommodations will for the first time all offer premium lodging. The existing Dolores River Inn will be refurbished and re-launched in spring 2012 as the new Kayenta Lodge and will feature 20 suites. Less extensive improvements will be made to the current Kiva Lodge, including in-room refurbishments, poolside cabanas and new fire pits.
