Charter House Innovations (Chi) has opened its second green CityFlats Hotel—this time in the heart of Grand Rapids, Mich. The Holland, Mich.-based company is pursuing LEED for New Construction certification at the Gold level for the 28-room property. CHi addtionally has a CityFlats Hotel in Holland, Mich., that opened about four years ago.
The new CityFlats Hotel Grand Rapids is in a building constructed in 1874. Numerous features make it environmentally friendly, including the fact that more than 30 percent of the materials used to construct the hotel were acquired from local sources and a majority of all seating and décor items were manufactured in nearby Holland. Additionally cork flooring tiles were used in guestrooms Instead of carpeting, with low-VOC (volatile organic compound) adhesives used below the flooring.
While the hotel has been open since early summer, it held its official opening on September 13.
