Airport hotels are taking on new attitudes
By KATIE MORELL
|
While the term “airport hotel” has long conjured up images of a generic, chain-operated property with no sense of place or individual style, that is changing. In fact, some airport hotels are offering amenities and even hip personas that rival those in downtown locations.
|
Last summer, members of the hotel community let out a collective gasp when—a little more than a mile north of Los Angeles International Airport—a boutique hotel was unveiled. The property, Custom Hotel, is the latest offspring of forward-thinking Joie de Vivre Hospitality and a transformation from a somewhat traditional airport property to a hip hotel decorated in retro ‘60s style.

Planner’s Perspective – Flying Forward
Andrea Hall
Corporate administrator,Farelogix Inc., Miami
- How long have you been planning meetings? I’ve been planning them full-time for about three years and part-time for much longer.
- How often do you use airport properties? We have quarterly meetings throughout the year and we go to airport properties often because most of our guests come in from other cities. We’ve done Chicago, London and Miami. Most of our meetings are for around 30 delegates.
- What do you look for in an airport property? Primarily, I look for affordability and per-person cost. And second, I look at the meeting room. It needs to be appealing and modern. I look for airy rooms.
